Weekly News debrief: 23-29 June

 AI171 Updates:

  • The UN's International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) is likely to join the AI171 investigation, seeking observer status.
  • The Ministry of Civil Aviation has confirmed that the black box data has been successfully accessed.
  • The DGCA has ordered a 'comprehensive safety audit' into the Indian aviation industry after the recent events of AI171 as well as several helicopter accidents.
  • A specialised parliament committee has summoned Civil Aviation Secretary Kumar Sinha to discuss aviation safety and precautions being taken post AI171.

Atlanta's Weather Causes Airport Shut-Down:
  • Operations of Hatsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL / KATL) were halted due to terrible weather conditions.
  • The city suffered a major thunderstorm including severe wind and hail which subsequently led to the ATC tower being evacuated.


On the Ground Collisions:
  • Two B737-800s collided on the ground in Russia on the 28th of June.
  • A 787 and A321 collided on the ground in Vietnam on the 28th of June- the 787's wing cut through the A321's rudder.
Voepass Grounded:
  • On the 9th of August 2024, an ATR-72 with 62 people. on board crashed into the ground.
  • After the black box was analysed, the Brazilian civil aviation ministry has revoked the Air Operator Certificate of Voepass (the airline which operated that aircraft).

 The Akasa Air Flight Report Flight Details: Flight:  QP1142 Route:  GOX-PNQ Date:  27 December 2024 Seat:  4F (priority check-in, baggage, popcorn & cashews) Boarding:  2:35 Departs:  3:35 PM Arrives:  4:45 PM Registration:  VT-YAL Aircraft:  B737-Max 8 Fare:  INR 14,442 (3 passengers) Gate:  12 Note how this aircraft does not include their premium A++ cabin, which comes in a 2-2 configuration instead of the usual 3-3. The menu on the flight included salads, croissants, appetizers, burgers, wraps, sandwiches, snacks, beverages, and ready-to-eat items. We boarded at 3:00 PM and it finishes at 3:20. Plane Theory: Akasa Air has the Best Pilots (In Indian Aviation)? As I was having a conversation with an Akasa Air Captain and FO, both of whom were former Jet Airways pilots. Soon, I was hit with the revelation that most senior Akasa Air pilots would be from Jet Airways. Jet Airways was one of India's premier FSCs, operating a large fleet of 192 aircraft. Out of these, 139 were Boeing 737s and 10 were 777s. The airline filed for bankruptcy and ceased operations on the 17th of April, 2019.
